Daedong's AI Indoor Garden Kit debuts at Smart Life Week

- The company expects growth in the urban agriculture market, and wants to develop AI Indoor Garden Kits to promote urban gardening and indoor farming
- Daedong uses “smart farming” technology powered by cutting-edge AI to spread the joy and value of farming with “easy farming” solutions engineered for urban environments
- Once a seed capsule is placed in the growing station, the device automatically controls everything from the growing method to growing environment and also monitors the growth rate

Daedong has unveiled a prototype of its AI garden kit featuring smart farming technology.

Daedong (CEO Won Yu-Hyun), a leader and pioneer in future agriculture, announced on October 11 that it showcased an innovative AI Indoor Garden Kit, which the company developed in-house, that helps with urban gardening and indoor farming for the first time at the “Smart Life Week (SLW)” in COEX (Gangnam-gu, Seoul) from October 10 to 12.

Daedong, a leader and pioneer in future agriculture, announced on October 11 that it showcased a prototype of its innovative AI Indoor Garden Kit, which the company developed in-house, for the first time at the “Smart Life Week (SLW)” in COEX (Gangnam-gu, Seoul) from October 10 to 12. In the photo, Daedong is explaining its smart farming technology to the audience.

SLW, an international information and communication technology expo hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, aims to improve people’s quality of life and offer a better urban environment through future smart technologies. This year’s theme is “Human-centric Tech, Connect to a Better Life.” 147 domestic and international companies will participate, with 134 people from 115 cities in 72 countries speaking at the forum.

Daedong sees the urban farming population and urban agricultural market growing thanks to the growth of the food tech industry, the decline in the farming population, climate change, natural disasters, and the increase in horticulturists who enjoy growing “companion (pet) plants.” To that end, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plans to grow the domestic urban farming population, which increased by nearly 50% from approximately 1.31 million in 2015 to approximately 1.96 million in 2022, to 3 million by 2027.

It is unsurprising, then, to see Daedong promoting a long-term development project for an AI garden kit that monitors the growth of crops in real time and controls the growing environment with smart technology. This latest product from Daedong is powered by AI and agricultural big data, and it also features the company’s advanced agricultural solution “Smart Farming” technology. Daedong expects that even novice farmers in urban areas will be able to easily cultivate crops in the city and indoors rather than on a farm, spreading the joy and value of agriculture.

For its new AI garden kit, Daedong will provide the seeds and a cultivation technique that uses “seed capsules,” which is where the seeds sprout from. This will allow anyone to easily grow the crops they want at home. The monitoring camera inside the garden kit automatically reads the seed capsule's code to register the specific type of seed, and automatically controls the environment such as temperature, humidity, nutrient solution level, and brightness according to the type of seed, thus minimizing the effort that goes into growing crops. Moreover, users can monitor their crops, in real time, with the Daedong garden kit app, analyze them using AI algorithms to predict growth, leaf size, and weight (when fresh), and easily understand when it is best to harvest.

Daedong’s AI garden kit can grow more than 40 varieties of leafy vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruits, as well as other functional natural plants developed by Daedong. In addition, the AI garden kit comes installed with cultivation techniques owned by Daedong that can help enhance the unique benefits of crops (e.g., select mode to improve sleep quality ▷ control the lettuce growing function to increase lactucarium levels), and the company ultimately plans to provide a personalized food service focused on health from a food tech perspective.
