Daedong & Kist Gangreung Institute of Natural Products Establishing Partnership to Co-develop the AI Green-Bio Smart Farming Platform
- Daedong received the growth recipe for two functional crops from the KIST for the smart farming platform business
- Partnership with the KIST for ▲discovering high-value natural product materials and ▲developing the smart farming platform optimized for producing natural products
- Daedong will make the manual for optimal growth of research crops and outsource manufacturing thereof for provision of commodities to individuals and companies
On 24th, it was announced that Daedong (co-CEOs Jun-Sik Kim and Yu-Hyun Won), an Agtech platform corporation and the parent company of Daedong Group, has concluded a partnership with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Gangreung Institute of Natural Products (Director General, Joonyeon Chang) for technology transfer and MOU to co-develop the AI green-bio [1] smart farming platform.
Daedong is collecting the agricultural data by growing high-functional crops and regular crops in the smart farms in the Seoul office and Seoul Nation University Suwon campus firsthand, as part of the smart farm business, and receiving the data from government institutions and corporations. Through this, Daedong is developing the growth recipe (solution) to maximize production of quality crops with the minimum resources. In addition, based on the collected data, Daedong is also pursuing the ▲smart farming platform business that provides solutions for the entire agricultural cycle, including preparation, growth, harvest and distribution of the crops, as well as the ▲hyper-personal health solution business that provides health-promoting products and services with the high-functional crops.
Upon concluding this technology transfer and MOU, Daedong will receive the growth recipe for two functional natural product crops, which have ingredients to improve liver’s function and skin’s anti-aging, as established in collaboration with KIST Doctor Joowon Noh's team. Daedong is also seeking cooperation with KIST’s Institute of Natural Products on the ▲discovery of high-value natural product materials, ▲development of the data-driven smart farming platform for optimized production of natural products, and ▲establishment of an ecosystem for the future agro-industry platform for successful commercialization of green bio R&D. The KIST Institute of Natural Products is a national research institution that has the research technologies for the whole cycle of green-bio industry-related natural products as well as about 1,200 patented technologies.
The Director General of KIST, Joonyeon Chang, said, "Through this technology transfer and commercialization partnership with Daedong, we will promote the development of the green-bio industry and commit ourselves to the co-development of the natural product materialization platform, contributing to the AI-based natural product material development and the successful commercialization of the production and growth technology of the smart farm."
Daedong Co., Ltd.’s CEO, Yu-Hyun Won, said, "Through this research partnership with KIST, we will build the green-bio business capacity in connection with the smart farming and continuously make success stories as an agtech corporation that leads the future agriculture, using the latest technologies including information and communication technologies (ICT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data."
In relation to this, Daedong will continuously develop recipes maximizing the growth and functional ingredients for high-functional and regular crops and obtain IPs (intellectual properties) for varieties with higher values than existing varieties through growing crops and variety improvement research. Ultimately, Daedong plans to establish the growth manual for optimal production in the smart greenhouses or plant factories, distribute this manual to farms, and establish the mass contracting production system to provide the original products or processed products to individuals or corporations.
[1] What is a green-bio industry? It is a new industry that creates added value across the agricultural, downstream and upstream industries by applying the biotechnology(BT), etc. to the agricultural life resources. The main fields of it include varieties, veterinary drugs, microorganisms, insects, natural products, food materials, etc. The government announced the ‘Green-bio–Industry Development Strategies’ in March 2023, which include doubling the size of the national green-bio industry by 2027, from 5.4 trillion won in 2020.
